Climate Justice, Community Resilience And The Future Of The Keta Lagoon Ramsar Site

In Brief
The Keta Lagoon Ramsar Site is in crisis. Coastal erosion, habitat destruction, and declining biodiversity are not abstract threats; they are displacing families, wiping out schools, and erasing livelihoods built on fishing and farming. In Keta, Anloga, Kedzi, Anyanui, and Fuveme, communities already living on the edge are being pushed further into uncertainty as rising seas consume their homes. Yet, these voices remain overlooked in national climate policies and global environmental negotiations. To challenge this silence, FIDEP has strengthened community-led monitoring by deploying the TIMBY mobile app, first tested in the Lake Bosomtwe Biosphere Reserve. This tool enables local observers to document environmental threats in real time, generating verifiable data for advocacy. Community monitors have already submitted 48 reports. However, the most pressing issue remains the relentless erosion of Ghana’s coastline, forcing entire families into repeated cycles of displacement.
Beyond data collection, FIDEP has established Resident Sustainability Teams (RSTs) to amplify local voices and strengthen grassroots engagement. Comprising 15 trained community members, these teams monitor biodiversity loss and environmental pressures, providing a ground-level perspective on the unfolding crisis. Here we present a status update.
